From a comparison made by Sergey Ivanov in the aforementioned article, it can be seen that the design and geometry of the Cortébert 620 are fully retained in the 1947 K-36 movement. There is an opinion that it was the Cortébert 616, but the height of the K-36 corresponds exactly to the Cortébert 620, not the 616. The prototype of the K-36 movement, which was installed in the Salut watches, was the Cortébert 620 movement. Archival documents give an idea of the problems that arose during the preparation of production due to the post-war shortage of resources. The first pieces of the movements were made at the 2nd Moscow Watch Factory already in November 1945. This, most likely, explains the choice of the name for the Moscow part of the K-36 project. And it was in the spring of 1945 that the decision was made to produce new pocket watches at the 2nd Moscow Watch Factory. Especially often (for obvious reasons) salutes thundered over Moscow in the spring of 1945. In 1943-45 salutes were fired quite often - a total of 26 1st degree salutes, 206 second and 122 third degree were given. This S is usually added to the number so that you know it’s a size number rather than a jewel count. For example 18 is the same as 18S, and also the same as 18-Size. The S next to the number just means “Size”. Early on, railroad pocket watches were allowed to be 18s or 16s, but eventually were required to be 16s. Pocket watches come in all different sizes, but the most common will be 18s, 16s and 12s for men, or 0s, 6s and 8s for ladies pocket watches. The case diameter is good for knowing how big the pocket watch is overall, if it will fit in your vest or watch pocket for example, but it is not relevant to the chart above. A pocket watch can have various case sizes depending on the style and design. It’s important to know that a pocket watch size has nothing to do with the outside case diameter.
Since the dial often extends beyond the movement, it’s not an accurate way of measuring the size of your pocket watch, however, with a well-trained eye it might be close enough to guess. To get the most precise pocket watch measurement, you will want to measure the movement’s lower plate below the dial.
